Shiva has been worshipped here by Parvathi, Brahma and Murugan Karpagambal is the main deity - Goddess who grants all the boons - the name is derived from 'Karpaga Vriksha' - a wish giving tree from Deva Loka It is stated that when Lord Shiva was teaching Panchakshara, Parvati Devi got distracted by the Peacock ( Mayil in Tamil). So shiva cursed her to be born as peacock in the earth. Having come to the earth she prayed to Shiva under the 'Punnai' tree here. The place where she did tapas in the form of peacock is now known as Mayil-a-pur. Kapaleeswarar - God of kapala - To teach lesson to Brahma, Shiva took away one of Brahma's head .
