Valmiki has prayed to Shiva here and hence the place is known as Valmiki Nagar by his name. Sage Agasthya has done Tapas here. At the end he was given knowledge about medicinal herbs by Shiva. Hence the name Marundeeswarar (Marundu = Medicine) The diving cow Kamadhenu has worshipped Shiva here to get relief from Sage Vashista's curse. Kamadhenu offer her milk to Shiva, hence Shivan is said to have milkish hue. Hence also he name 'Palvanna Nathar"" (milk = Pal, Vannam = Color in Tamil) Vedas & Devas have worshipped Shiva here
