The temple was originally located closer to the sea shore and was relocated to the current site at 1640 AD. It was then built in 1678. Chatrapathi Shivaji, the Maratha warrior and the founder of the Hindawi-Swarajya in the 17th century, had worshiped in this temple incognito on 3 October 1667. Currently Kalikambal is in Santha Swarup - calm posture. It is believed that a fierce form of Goddess was being worshiped earlier. The Meru here is said to have been installed by Adi Sankarar. Many Sages - Vyasar, Parasar, Agasthiar, Ankiresar, Pulasthiar and Devas - Varunan Indhran, Guberan and Viswaakarma are said to have worshipped Sri Kalikambal. It is said that Sri Guberan got all his wealth only after worshipping this Sri Kalikambal here

Sub History

The temple was said to have been inside St George Fort, before. Fort is called Kottai in Tamil. Hence also known as "Kottai Amman'. The great Tamil poet, Subramanya Bharathiar, when he was working for Swadesha Mithran, used to visit this temple often. It is stated that his famous “Yadumaki Ninrai Kali” song was written for Kalikambal.
