Legend has it that, an ardent devotee of Eakambareswarar in Kancheepuram, used to Visit him very often. For one Pradosam he had a problem of visiting the temple due to some exigencies in the office. But he started late and managed to visit Ekambareswarar in Kanchi. While coming back from Kancheepuram it became very late. He was so tired that he slept in Sowcarpet, the place where the temple is situated. Pleased with his devotion, Shiva and Parvathy appeared in his dreams and told him that he need not visit Kancheepuram from now on and he can build a temple for them in Sowcarpet itself for easy darshan. Shiva then appeared as Swayambhu (swayam + Bhu = self created) and thus this temple came into existence.

Sub History

Shani Peyarachi (transit of Saturn) is celebrated in a big way. This is because Shani faces Mother Goddess Ambal in the temple and is believed that She helps a devotee to overcome troubles associated with the bad positioning of Shani in horoscope. The belief is that 0ffering silver color silk thread – zari and Tulsi leaves garland to this Hanuman murti will help in fulfillment of dreams. Those who had good dreams can offer prayers here for its fulfillment. Those that had bad dreams can do prayers for non-fulfillment of the dream.
